This is a first digital presentation I developed for a class project in Master of Art in Sign Language Education.
Transcript:
Blue background with a white rectangle in the middle containing the title “Using Verb in Space” in blue font. Below the white rectangle is a subtitle, “Signing Naturally: Student Workbook, Unit 7-12, unit 8.3” in white font.
A video in the middle of the screen showed Professor Dunham, a dirty blonde white man in a red shirt.
Today, we will talk about how we can modify a verb sign in space based on its location. In the next slide, you will see a man in a jacket giving an orb to another man in a different location. Check it out.
A gif showed a scene from “Guardians of the Galaxy.” On the left is a bald blue-skinned man, Yondu, wearing a burgundy coat. He had his hand out, expecting something. In the middle is a brunette white man, Starlord, wearing a brown jacket. His face was covered in dirt. On the right of Starlord is black hair, green-skinned woman, Gamara. She is looking at Starlord. He gave the orb to Yondu.
You noticed the man in a brown jacket with an orb in his hand. He gave it to the blue-skinned man.
Professor Dunham moved to the left side of the screen to depict Yondu’s position.
How will you sign if someone is giving you the orb?
He showed the sign GIVE by starting the handshape from the opposite space and moving it toward himself.
The gif faded.
Remember, when you sign GIVE to another person, start your sign from your body to that person. If that person is giving you something, you start the sign from his space and move it toward yourself.
Now you know the sign for GIVE, how will you sign the opposite of it? The sign is TAKE. A man has a wallet out.
Professor Dunham shifted his body to the right, facing left.
He is giving out the money.
An animated gif was showing two hands on the right. The hand on the bottom was holding a brown wallet. The hand on top drew a dollar bill. On the left side of the gif was a hand with a bracelet. It took the wallet instead of the dollar bill.
Professor Dunham shifted his body toward the audience.
The wife took all the money.
Professor Dunham shifted back to the right side. He expressed an astonished look on his face.
You took all my money!
The gif faded.
To sign someone taking your money, you start with the handshape from your body and move it toward the taker. If you are taking, you start from the opposing space and move it toward your body.
A gif of a football player in white jersey, purple helmet, and purple pants throwing a football.
See the quarterback throwing the ball. He scanned for a player in a different space. He found an opening and threw it in that direction. You can change the direction of the sign to different spaces, depending on the player’s location.
The gif faded.
Suppose you want to sign a player from the left side, throwing the ball to another player on the right sign. Here is how to show that sign. You start the sign THROW from left to right.
Professor Dunham depicted the two players throwing the ball back and forward to each other.
With a quarterback, you can throw to the right, the straight, or the left.
A gif was showing a black man wearing a red leather jacket. Several black hands were gesturing at him. He struggled to respond by mumbling and moving his head around. A picture of three question marks of different colors in this order; yellow, red, and blue.
The next sign we will learn is ASK. See the man standing. Someone asked him a question. Someone else asked him a question too. Then he is being asked many questions. He does not like many questions!
The gif faded.
As for me, I love questions! Feel free to ask me many questions!
For the next sign, LOOK, it can change direction depending on if you are looking up or down, or a person staring at you.
A gif was showing a classroom with teen Latinx students sitting at the school desk. In the middle, a girl was focusing on the paper. Five students surrounding her moved their desks closer to the girl, trying to look at her paper. The girl looked up and around. The five students moved back to their position, pretending to be occupied with their works.
The gif is showing the students cheating! They move closer and look down at the student’s writing. When the student looked up, the rest of the students moved back and looked away.
The gif faded.
The students cheated by looking down, then they looked away.
The woman in the gif, what is she doing?
A black and white gif showed a woman holding a DSLR camera with a flash attachment. She took flash pictures repeatedly.
She is taking pictures with flash on.
Professor Dunham was depicting taking a picture in a different direction.
The gif faded.
To show that you are taking multiple pictures.
Professor Dunham is depicting taking many flashing pictures while moving his sign from right to left.
If I am alone and I want to take a picture of myself.
A gif was showing a black woman with cornhole hairstyle, Zendaya. She is wearing a black jacket with a white shirt under it. She used her smartphone to take pictures of herself.
How do I sign SELFIE? You move your hand to opposing space, with your hand making a flash movement toward yourself. You can add a duckface.
The gif faded.
Professor Dunham made a duckface while taking a selfie.
It’s up to you!
Now you have seen how a verb sign can be modified to the location space. For examples:
GIVE-YOU, GIVE-BACK, GIVE-TO-OTHER-PERSON
Can you think of more sign, such as COME-OVER-THERE, COME-OVER-HERE, COME-TO-OTHER-PLACE,
Or VISIT-YOU, VISIT-ME. Can you think of more signs? Come on, you can do it.
