Transcript: The 21st century is the new frontier for sign language educators. Universities all over the country are seeking master sign language educators(Cagle, 2019). Sign language education had made a breakthrough due thanks to the improved bandwidth and internet connection. Teachers can develop video assignment on an electronic learning system to be use outside of class. All of this access comes with responsibility. Today, students, regardless of the class size, cognitive diversity, and dynamics, still need assessments to measure their learning growth. There are three aspects of assessment to take in consideration: the approaches, techniques, and applied principles.According to the MLA Language Enrollment Database, the growth of interest in ASL had increased over the years. To meet the demand of sign language education, there are universities that will encourage inexperienced teachers to enroll thirty students in a skill-based course. As a teacher, I taught large classes, and realized formative assessment took my time away from lesson planning. Using the practical principle, I applied the low formative/high summative approach to maintain assessments load. I will be able to manage the class and maintain with the assessment.Students will have formative assignments focusing on their weekly conversations with their partners. Those weekly conversations will build up the students’ competency and performance to prepare them for the summative assignments and tests. The assessment techniques I aim use in the midterms are short answers, multiple choices, matching. To ensure the reliability of the test, all the questions will be video-recorded and up to date with the curriculum.Students are to submit a video journal after each unit. This is the opportunity for me to view their progression. The students will receive backwash from their teacher to pinpoint any signing error. With technology, the student’s video can be assessment with the teacher providing feedback in target language. This is a proactive approach to prevent fossilization(Harris, 2014). Students can focus on the signing itself during class time. After the students will record themselves conversing while using authentic topics provided by the teachers. Since students already practice with their partners, weekly for 14 weeks, they should be capable of maintaining conversation using target language for at least three minutes. The teacher will grade the students’ conversations by using the rubric. There are three aspects of assessment to take in consideration, the approaches, techniques, and applied principles. Using practicality and reliability into the low-formative, high-summative approach, students will be able use authentic contents to converse in target language.Teachers provide backwash for all summative exams and projects according to the learning outcomes, supported by valid assessment tools, such as video journals, and rubrics, By optimizing the correct assessments by use modern technology, we are capable of preparing the students for their journey into the 21st century.
